UDC hears about Buchanan presidency during meeting
The United Daughters of the Confederacy held its October meeting at the McAlester Public Library Oct. 9 and it was called to order by President Marjorie Hass.
A program about President James Buchanan given by Linda Collier. He lived a few miles north of the Mason-Dixon line and believed that as a border northerner, he could prevent the problems from starting a Civil War but was unable to prevent it. He was a wealthy lawyer and bachelor who was ambivalent about slavery. He bought two slaves and promised to free them in exchange for two years of hard work.
He served in the House and Senate and was also the only president who never married. He ran against Republican James C. Fremont, promising to protect southern rights and warning that the South would secede if Fremont won. Buchanan won the election.
His tenure was not a great term and Republican Abraham Lincoln won election in 1860. It is said that when Buchanan escorted Lincoln to the White House he said to Lincoln, “If you are as happy, dear, on entering that house as I am in leaving, you are the happiest man in the world.”
The table for meeting was decorated in the Halloween motif and members enjoyed lunch furnished by Hass.
