Plans set for holiday dinner

With plans under way to hold the annual Pittsburg County Community Thanksgiving Dinner next Thursday, those making arrangements are ready to start taking phone calls from those who would like to participate.

Once again, no income or age requirements are in place. The free holiday dinner with all the trimmings is being offered free of charge to anyone who wants to participate, said Pittsburg County Assessor Jim Kelley, one of the organizers of the event.

“If they would like to have somebody to eat with, they’re welcome,” Kelley said.

Plans call for the Community Thanksgiving Dinner to be served at approximately noon on Thanksgiving Day, which is Nov. 26, at the George Nigh National Guard Armory at Third Street and Polk Avenue.

Those making plans for the dinner are once again asking those who would like to partake of the meal to either phone and make arrangements ahead of time or to fill out a reservation form.

The number to call is 423-7379, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Monday through Friday only. No one will be available to take the calls on the weekend or after regular business hours.

In addition to those who eat at the armory, people can also pick up Thanksgiving meals at the site. Volunteers plan to make deliveries around the county to those who want to participate but who are homebound.

Those planning the event would like to know as soon as possible how many meals they need to prepare.

Kelley said the reservation forms, for those who do not make arrangements by phone calls, are available at senior citizen centers around the county and at places such as Hartshorne City Hall, where volunteers make their own deliveries.

Those who are homebound and who need deliveries made to them need to give directions to their homes, especially if they live in a rural area.

A street address might work in the towns, but a mail box or rural route number may not be very helpful to those making deliveries in the country.

“They need to be as specific as possible in their directions,” Kelley said.

Arrangements should also be made in case the person making the delivery in a rural area has trouble finding the residence.

“They should leave a phone number,” Kelley said.

Also, those putting together the dinners can always use help on Thanksgiving Day.

“Those that want to help deliver individual meals should show up at the armory next Thursday,” Kelley said.
