Women's group holds convention in McAlester
The General Federation of Women’s Clubs of Oklahoma, Southeast District, is comprised of seven clubs with more than 790 years of volunteer service in their communities. This rich heritage is paramount in the minds of current members as they continue this legacy.
During the 87th Annual SE District Convention recently held in McAlester, the dedicated members of Durant, Antlers, Hugo, McAlester, Wilburton, Poteau and Heavener donated 20 tote bags for their “Save the CASA Kids” project.
Lead by Inger Raunikar, SE District Vice President, a backpack or tote bag is filled with necessary toiletries, lounge wear, socks, coloring books and crayons, drink cups, and stuffed animals to comfort the children who are removed from their abusive homes usually in the middle of the night.
“Our members have generously given these tote bags filled with items children need for their first night away from the abusive home,” Raunikar said.
These tote bags will be distributed to CASA offices in Southeast Oklahoma which include Durant, McAlester, Wilburton, Antlers and Poteau by GFWC members.
Eddie Kelly, CASA of Southeast Oklahoma director, addressed the group explaining the benefits of CASA to the children and families in SE Oklahoma. She also described the volunteer opportunities and needs within CASA to be able to provide these benefits. Those interested in volunteering within CASA may call 426-5779.
The General Federation of Women’s Clubs, one of the world’s largest and oldest women’s volunteer community service organizations, was founded in 1890 and is headquartered in Washington, DC. GFWC has more than 100,000 members in affiliated clubs in every state and more than a dozen countries. For more information, visit www.GFWC.org.
