McALESTER —
On Monday, the City of McAlester Parks and Recreation installed a mist machine that is designed to help people keep cool while walking around Mike Deak Track.
Superintendent of McAlester Parks Glen Kerns said while the 100 plus degree weather was on, two ladies who walk at Mike Deak stopped in to the McAlester Parks and Recreation office and said it would be nice if there was a cooling station or at least and emergency way to cool down at the track.
Kerns said he and the staff started researching options and found a misting machine in a trade magazine.
Kerns said the “mister” only costed $1,000 after installation, which included cement, water pipe and the unit itself.
He said the machine is easy to use. There is a silver button you push and for 15 seconds a very fine mist is emitted and as you walk away evaporates in seconds. He said it is very pleasant and significantly cools the body down.
He said, however, you can use push the button again after the first initial 15 seconds as many times as you need to help cool down.
The mist machine is on the southwest corner of the Mike Deak Walking Track at Mike Deak Field. Mike Deak field is at Thirteenth Street and McArthur Avenue.
