Kiamichi Technology Center to host open house

McALESTER —

The Kiamichi Technology Center plans to open its doors even wider to the community next Wednesday when the facility hosts its annual open house.
KTC’s 43rd annual open house is set from 4-6 p.m. on Feb. 6.
“This is CareerTech month in February,” said April Murray, who is director of the Kiamichi Technology Center’s McAlester Campus.
She said the open house is for anyone who would like to visit the campus and learn more about KTC and its programs.
“We would like the public to understand the variety of skills students are acquiring,” Murray said. “By partnering with the business community, career and technology education prepares students to become successful employees as well as future leaders.”
Murray said several activities are planned during the open house.
“We’ll have hot dogs and pop,” she said. Among the other activities is a station where individuals can have their blood pressure checked.
KTC offers 15 full-time programs, with feature demonstrations, handouts or other door prizes set to be offered during the open house.
Those attending the open house will be given a card that they can have punched or marked for every KTC class they visit. That will make them eligible to participate in a grand prize drawing in which a picnic table manufactured by Webcoat Products will be given away, according to Murray.
Career and Technology Education works is the theme of the month-long celebration. It designed to create an opportunity to demonstrate how CareerTech programs can educate students to be college and career-ready, and prepare them for career fields with a high demand and high wages, according to Karl Scifres of KTC.
Fourteen schools in the area send students to KTC for either two or three hours blocks, set either during the mornings or afternoons.
High school students can begin KTC classes during their junior year. Many tenth-grade students have already toured KTC schools with their schools during the current school year, but the open house provides an opportunity for the students’ parents and other family members to tour the campus as well, Scifres noted.
As a start-up to the open house, KTC hosted a Jan. 26 media day attended by some of the staff of the News-Capital and McAlester Radio.
It featured a luncheon prepared by Cinda Edwards, KTC’s basic culinary arts instructor, and by Assistant Instructor Kathy Scifres, from the school’s Commercial Home Services class.
Nearly 500,000 students are enrolled in CareerTech programs in Oklahoma, according to Scifres. Oklahoma is one of the leading states in enrollment and support of CareerTech education in the nation, he said.
