McALESTER —
The McAlester Public Schools Board of Education has approved a hike in the price of student and adult lunches in what MPS Child Nutrition Manager Dana Clark says is an effort to stay in compliance with a federal law.
The hike was approved at July’s school board meeting after Clark addressed said the hike would keep the schools in compliance with what she called the “Healthy Hungry Kids” act.
On Dec. 13, 2010, President Obama signed into law the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, also known to educators as the HHFKA.
The USDA website reports “ The legislation authorizes funding and sets policy for USDA’s core child nutrition programs: the National School Lunch Program, the School Breakfast Program, the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (also known as WIC), the Summer Food Service Program, and the Child and Adult Care Food Program. The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act allows USDA, for the first time in over 30 years, opportunity to make real reforms to the school lunch and breakfast programs by improving the critical nutrition and hunger safety net for millions of children.”
