Kiamichi Tech adds hospitality, tourism career major

Five of the Kiamichi Technology Center campuses have added a new direction to their Business Administration and Information Technology programs by offering a new career major, titled Hospitality and Tourism Manager.

Hospitality and Tourism Manager will be available as a major for adult full-time/short-term students at the McAlester, Atoka, Durant, Hugo and Stigler campuses. This rigorous career major will consist of 1,080 hours of comprehensive instruction, intense worksite learning opportunities, and multiple levels of industry certification. The Hospitality and Tourism Manager career major will consist of computer fundamentals, human resource management, lodging and restaurant management, and a complex look into the hospitality industry.

Career opportunities for the Hospitality and Tourism Manager include: Hotel/Motel General Manager; Hotel/Motel Front Desk Manager; Hotel/Motel Housekeeping Supervisor; Casino Manager/Supervisor; Restaurant Manager Trainee; Hospitality Manager; Travel Agent; or State Park Manager/Ranger.

The five instructors at these KTC campuses have spent many hours preparing online instruction, attending trainings both in-state and out-of-state to prepare for the “roll out” of this career major this year. In addition, they all passed the certification test this summer at the American Hotel and Lodging Association’s Education Institute at San Diego State University. They include Jack Hedrick, McAlester campus; Christie Hyatt, Atoka campus, Pam Graham, Hugo campus, Penny Lovell, Durant campus and Nellwyn Carlton, Stigler campus.

Kiamichi Technology Center has a working agreement with the Choctaw Nation Casinos that will allow KTC to send students for capstone hours, and if the student is referred by the instructor, he or she is guaranteed a job interview.

For more information on this and other courses of study at KTC, contact the business instructor at the nearest campus, or Jack Hedrick, the BAIT Instructor at the McAlester Campus who led the initiative to make this program a reality for KTC.
