The McAlester Lions Club recently celebrated its 94th anniversary and installed officers for the 2012-2013 year during a banquet at the McAlester Country Club.
Lion Don Hackler installed Lions Jerry Grubbs as president, Neal Wood as vice president, Jim McLeod as secretary /treasurer, Kathy Crowl and Tony Fields as one-year directors, Steve Banker as Tail Twister, Billy Jack Boatright as lion tamer and George Monte as membership chairman.
Special awards were given by Program Chair Deb Nortunen and Lion President Bill Nicholson. Lion Lance Woodliff served as Master of Ceremonies.
Woodliff was recognized for exceptional service and dedication to the club with the Lion of the Year award. Lions Bob Bartheld and Nicholson each received a Melvin Jones Fellowship award.
During the past year, the McAlester Lions Club has assisted 94 individuals in purchasing eyeglasses, sponsored multiple sports teams at the Boys & Girls Club, supported the local Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, donated to Shared Blessings, Special Olympics, Oklahoma Lion’s Boy’s Ranch in Perkins, funded McAlester Main Street Association for Christmas lights, donated to the Oklahoma Eye Bank, funded an optical medical mission in Hondurous and donated to McAlester High School for the repair of their baseball training facility.
The club collected $1,500 for White Cane, a drive for assistance for the Oklahoma Eye Bank. The club also collected 292 used pairs of eyeglasses for recycling.
Others attending the banquet were Jerry and Shirley Banker, Diana Banker, Pay Bartheld, Jerri and Rico Burris, Buck and Katherine Conner, Tom and Margene Crowl, Carol Ervin, Margarite Fields, Ashley and Justin Faulkner, Jan Grubbs, Doris Hackler, Bill and Zoe Henley, Jim Mays and Jo Ann Vermillion, Don and Ima Jean Nichols, Connie Nicholson, Mike and Carri Parks, Ken and Thelda Martin, Ed Robinson, Randy Walters, Clark Ward, Crystie Wesley and Darvell Hearod, Nancy Wood and Jane Woodliff.
