City of McAlester gets nod for green

Representatives of the city of McAlester received a special Tree City USA honor at the state capitol in Oklahoma City this week. McAlester has participated in the Tree City USA program for 22 years.

McAlester is among 23 cities, two Air Force bases and five public utilities that have been designated as a Tree City USA community or Tree Line USA utility in Oklahoma this year.

To earn Tree City USA status from The National Arbor Day Foundation, a city must establish a tree board, create a tree ordinance, spend $2 per capita annually on taking care of the city’s trees and celebrate Arbor Day with an official proclamation and city-wide observations.

The city of McAlester organized tree planting projects with schools and churches. For more on this story, see Friday's edition of the McAlester News-Capital. For subscription information call 423-1700.
