Centerpoint Energy is going underground, with the help of S & S Plumbing out of Searcy, Ark., replacing worn out gas lines in McAlester.
“There are about four and a half miles of gas line to be replaced,” said Lyndell Smith, of S & S Plumbing, as he worked the horizontal directional drilling equipment driving the line south under Second Street in front of the News-Capital offices Wednesday morning. “The lines are old and they’ve got a leak or two, so they’re upgrading, bringing them up to code. We’re putting in a new main and everybody will get a new service line to their home or business.”
The line replacement covers several city blocks in the area of Second and Third streets, from Kiowa Avenue to South Street and surrounding areas.
Smith said the repairs will likely take two to three months to complete.
