Pride in McAlester hosts Volunteer Banquet

McALESTER — On Thursday Pride in McAlester hosted it’s fourth Annual Volunteer Appreciation Banquet at the Whistle Stop Bistro.

“I’m really happy with the turnout,” said Justin Few president of the PIM Board of Directors.

He estimated more than 60 PIM supporters were at the event which included a silent auction, dinner, slide show and award presentations.

Stephanie Giacomo executive director of the organization said Bank of Oklahoma and Triad Transport sponsored the event and Wild Herb Natural Skin Care, Studio 23 Photography, Judy Boswell of Deborah Martin Realty, Lovera’s Italian Market, BP America Production Co., Brenda and Ernie Russell, Justin and Lori Few, Mac Oil & Gas, and Weddle Signs all contributed to the silent auction.

During the award presentation Few honored PIM supporters and the work they did the past year.

Awards were given to Volunteer of the Year, Brenda Russell; Outstanding Student, Makenna Smith, and the Pride In McAlester Spirit Award was accepted on behalf of the City of McAlester by McAlester City Councilman John Titsworth and city employees Jennifer Santino and John Modzelewsk. Few said the awards were given for the recipients “continuous efforts to beautify the city, encourage recycling in city offices and take active steps to reduce energy consumption.”

The Community Partner of the Year award was given to McAlester Public Schools.

Giacomo said, “their partnership in various projects including the restoration of a painted map and the creation of compass and clock at the Emerson Elementary playground, planting trees at Edmond Doyle, repainting at Washington Early Childhood Center and participation in the ‘Outdoor Classroom’ for second graders.”

Superintendent Dr. Marsha Gore and Public Relations Director Debbie Watkins accepted the award for the school district.

Meanwhile Giacomo said funds raised at the event will be used to finance the various community activities held throughout the year, including painting projects, litter pickups and community events.
