U.S. Navy country-bluegrass band set for Saturday night performance

McALESTER — The tickets are all gone — but there’s still a chance to get inside.

Country Current, considered by the U.S. Navy as its “premiere country-bluegrass ensemble,” is set to perform in McAlester at 6:30 p.m. Saturday night at Life Church, 1300 S. George Nigh Expressway.

“The tickets were free, so I can’t say it’s sold out,” said Publisher Amy Johns, of the McAlester News-Capital, which is sponsoring the concert in conjunction with Life Church.

Johns said all the tickets to the concert were given away by the News-Capital within a business week of when they became available. Although 600 tickets were given out, those without tickets still have an opportunity to attend the concert.

“I want people to know they can still come,” said Johns.

The doors are set to open around 5:45 p.m. for those with tickets, she said.

“People must be seated by 6:15,” Johns said, referring to ticket-holders.  “At 6:15, we’re going to open the doors to the general public.”

Once the doors are open to non-ticket holders at 6:15, any seats not already taken will be available to the general public.

“I want to thank Life Church’s leadership and congregation for being partners with us again to bring such a wonderful cultural event to our community,” Johns said.

The News-Capital and Life Church partnered in March, 2009, to bring the U.S. Navy Sea Chanters to McAlester for an enthusiastically-received performance.

Country Current is a country music-bluegrass band that’s won international recognition for its concerts. The Navy calls the band’s stage show “fun-filled and family friendly.”

“This seven-member ensemble employs musicians from diverse backgrounds with extensive high-profile recording and touring experience in the music scenes of Nashville Tenn., New York City, New Orleans and more,” the Navy said in a statement about the group.

“In the tradition of country music, each member is a skilled performer on multiple instruments. The band utilizes banjo, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, mandolin, fiddle, electric bass, upright bass, Dobro, pedal steel guitar and drum set.”
