Crowder man shot by OHP

McALESTER — Officials say a Crowder man is in stable condition after being shot twice by an Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper. Russell J. Doctor, 24, of Crowder, was hit twice by a trooper shortly after noon Wednesday, according to OHP Capt. George Brown.

Doctor, who has not been charged in the case, is alleged to have pulled a long gun on the trooper after a pursuit on the Indian Nation Turnpike that ended near Antlers, according to Brown. Brown said the incident occurred after a trooper spotted a stolen vehicle near State Highway 3.

The pursuit moved to the turnpike and the trooper used a tactical vehicle intervention, spinning the car into a nearby convenience store, according to the OHP spokesman. Brown said that’s when Doctor allegedly exited the vehicle with a rifle and pointed it at the trooper.

The OHP official said the trooper, who OHP has not identified, fired five rounds and Doctor was hit once in the scalp and once in the hand. Brown said Doctor was placed in custody and flown by medical helicopter to a Tulsa hospital where he is listed in stable condition.

Brown said Doctor will be jailed in Pushmataha County after his release from the hospital.
