Crews control wildfire in eastern Oklahoma

OKTAHA, Okla. — Firefighters in the air and on the ground have brought a wildfire that burned about a 1.5 square mile area in McIntosh County under control.

Emergency management official Wesley Dawson told the Muskogee Phoenix the blaze started late Thursday afternoon near the Civil War-era Honey Springs Battlefield.

Bureau of Indian Affairs airplanes dropped 1,200 gallons of water at a time of the flames and fire crews from Muskogee and McIntosh counties fought the blaze on the ground.

Muskogee County Emergency Management Director Jeff Smith said crews were getting the fire contained about 8 p.m. and many firefighters were allowed to leave. A McIntosh County dispatcher said late Thursday the blaze was under control.

Dawson said he hadn’t received reports of injuries or damaged structures.
