Knights of Columbus thankful for support for Tootsie Roll project

McALESTER — Dressed in yellow aprons, several members of the McAlester area Knights of Columbus  No. 775 spent the weekend standing outside of Walmart passing out Tootsie Rolls to raise money for the Center of Family Love in Okarche.

The fundraiser called the “Tootsie Roll Program” a center which provides lifetime care to adults with developmental disabilities, according to Bill Derichsweiler who serves as grand knight for the Knights of Columbus. He said the center provides family style living for the disabled adults who are able learn to take care of their homes, cook, clean and shop together. 
“They also have a greenhouse and a candy store that they learn to work in,” Derichsweiler said.
The knights have been raising money for the center for more than 15 years, he said but this year donations exceeded those of previous years.
 “I just want to thank the people of this area for their support,” Derichsweiler said. “People were very generous this year.”
