WILBURTON —
Seven members of the Eastern Oklahoma State College GEAR UP for Success team and Eastern’s grant manager joined more than 1,300 GEAR UP professionals from across the nation as they attended the 2013 NCCEP/GEAR UP Capacity–Building Workshop in Las Vegas, Feb. 2-7.
The workshop is designed to help new and experienced GEAR UP professionals effectively meet their project goals and objectives through professional development and strategic planning activities. The Capacity–Building Workshop is coordinated by the National Council for Community and Education Partnerships (NCCEP) and is planned in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Education.
The conference began with Eastern’s team members holding a team meeting to discuss conference strategies and desired outcomes.
The opening general session began with the Valley High School ROTC Color Guard presenting the nation’s colors and Tyrone Cooper, a GEAR UP graduate, singing the national anthem.
NCCEP Executive Director Nathan R. Monell, CAE, addressed the audience throughout the conference. Attendees from across the nation meet to hone their grant implementation practices. In addition to the numerous workshops, opportunities were available for networking with colleagues.
Nevada’s Governor, the Honorable Brian Sandoval, proclaimed February 3–6, 2013 as “NCCEP/GEAR UP Capacity Building Workshop Week.” Greetings were also delivered for Las Vegas Mayor, the Honorable Carolyn G. Goodman and Senator Harry Reid. The Honorable Chaka Fattah, Congressman from the Second District of Pennsylvania and architect of the country’s most successful early college awareness and preparation program (GEAR UP), spoke to the audience via tape.
Team members selected various workshop tracks including GEAR UP 101; GEAR UP Program Models: Effective Program Outreach; Benchmarks & Transitions from Middle School to High School; GEAR UP Grant Management Tools for Successful Fiscal Management; Weapons of Mass Communication (and Other Cool Tools); Financial Literacy; Transitioning from Common Core to Support College Readiness and Success; Optimizing Community Partners to Increase STEM Initiatives; and Power to Lead—Directors.
