It’s Pinewood Derby time.

McALESTER — It’s Pinewood Derby time.

This year, the Pinewood Derby will be Feb. 23 at St. John’s Catholic Church at 300 E. Washington Ave., in McAlester, according to Bob Masters, district manager for the Boy Scouts’ OkiTuli District.

The Pinewood Derby is an annual Cub Scouts event that involves the making of a small wooden model car from an official pinewood block. There are special dimensions and rules that must be followed and weight restrictions for the car.

After the cars are built, the Cubs race the cars in a competition called the Pinewood Derby where the gravity powered cars are sent down a specially made track.

From now until the end of February, those who want to participate can visit Lowe’s in McAlester for a Pinewood Derby workshop, according to Masters.

He said Lowe’s in McAlester will sponsor a free Pinewood Derby Workshop every other Saturday starting this week, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Although the derby is designed for Cub Scouts, Masters said anyone can participate.

“We have different divisions for the Scouts, and then we have a divisions for girls and adults.”

The dates for the Lowe’s workshops are Jan. 5, Jan. 19, Feb. 2 and Feb. 16. Pinewood Derby car kits will be available at Lowe’s for $5.

Masters said more details on the Pinewood Derby would be coming soon once they are finalized.
