OSP names officer/supervisor of year for 2011

McALESTER — The Oklahoma State Penitentiary recently released the names of their 2011 employees of the year. OSP employee Randy L. Roden was honored with the 2011 Officer of the Year award and OSP employee J.T. Kennedy was honored with the 2011 Supervisor of the year award.

Roden, a 1972 graduate of McAlester High School, is currently employed at OSP as a corporal, or correctional officer III, and has served the Oklahoma Department of Corrections and OSP since 1993. Roden is married and enjoys spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren.

“Cpl. Roden is a great asset to the Oklahoma State Penitentiary,” stated OSP Warden Randy Workman in a letter of nomination. “He always puts forth a special effort to assist with any special events that are held at the facility. ... This officer has participated in many manhunts for JBCC (Jackie Brannon Correctional Center) escapes and worked for two days when the Jones brothers escaped from OSP in 1991. ... Roden has an interest in the historical preservation of the Oklahoma State Penitentiary and participates in the collection of historical data of the facility.”

Kennedy, a 1985 graduate of McAlester High School, is currently employed at OSP as a captain, or correctional security manager II, and he has served the Oklahoma Department of Corrections and OSP since 1991. He is married to Crystal Kennedy, also an employee at OSP, and together they have four children, ages 6 to 19.

“Captain Kennedy is a strong leader with high standards of personal and professional ethics,” stated his nominating supervisor in a letter of nomination. “He follows through in any task that he is given and is a reliable asset to the Oklahoma State Penitentiary. ... Through his abilities to acquire and apply knowledge rapidly, Captain Kennedy has demonstrated that he can work independently and effectively handle multiple tasks simultaneously, ensuring the daily operations of the facility run in an effective manner.”
