Heavier police presence, office closings, slated for Labor Day weekend

McALESTER — Members of the McAlester-based Troop D of the Oklahoma Highway Patrol plan an increased presence over area highways during the long Labor Day weekend.

“We’ve canceled everybody’s days off for Friday through Monday,” said OHP Lt. David Storts. “Every trooper we have is working.”

While troopers will be looking for all types of driving violations, they will be keeping a special watch for impaired or intoxicated drivers, as well as for seat belt violators.

“We have a DUI overtime shift,” Storts said. “They’ll be looking for drunk drivers.”

Plans also call for a seat belt shift to be on the road, according to  Storts.

The Pittsburg County Sheriff’s Department also plans an increased presence over the holiday weekend.

“We are going to have all of our people out,” said Pittsburg County Sheriff Joel Kerns.

“We’ll have extra people out,” he said. “We’re going to be looking for intoxicated drivers.”

The McAlester Police Department also plans an increased presence in the city over the extended Labor Day weekend.

Meanwhile, many local, state and federal government offices will be closed Monday for the Labor Day holiday.

In McAlester, City Hall will be closed Monday and most city workers will be off, except for those providing essential services.

Also, the Pittsburg County Courthouse will be closed Monday.

Plans call for both the courthouse and City Hall to reopen Tuesday morning.

Also, U.S. Postal Service windows will be closed on Monday and no mail will be delivered. Plans call for the Post Office buildings to remain unlocked so those who have post office boxes inside the buildings can access them.

Federal offices are also set to close Monday, since Labor Day is a national holiday.

Plans  call for the McAlester Public Library to be closed on Monday for the Labor Day holiday, before reopening during regular office hours at 9 a.m. Tuesday.

However, the library is scheduled to be open from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Saturday.
