McALESTER —
An inmate who walked away from Jackie Brannon Correctional Center in McAlester Monday morning was apprehended in Tulsa, just over 12 hours after his escape, according to JBCC Deputy Warden Rick Moham.
Mark Dwayne Smith Jr., 28, was discovered missing during the facility’s inmate count Monday morning at around 6:30 a.m., Moham said.
According to the deputy, Smith walked away from the minimum security facility, went around the back of one of the housing units and apparently met someone who picked him up on the road.
“Last night, Department of Corrections Internal Affairs received information that led them to the motel room in Tulsa where they found him,” Moham said.
Smith was captured without incident at around 7:40 p.m. and Jackie Brannon officers transported him back from Tulsa. According to Moham, he has been placed in a segregation housing unit at Oklahoma State Penitentiary.
Smith, who has been at JBCC since April 2009, is serving prison sentences for Tulsa County convictions for assault and battery on a police officer and auto theft, prison officials said.
