McALESTER —
The McAlester Fire Department recently collected $10,000 in a fundraising effort to support Oklahoma Project Women.
McAlester fireman Mike Caniglia said this is the third year MFD has raised funds for Oklahoma Project Women — an organization that provides mammograms for women in need.
“We started this in 2010,” Caniglia said, “and that first year we started the program we raised $6,245. Last year, in 2011, we raised $8,500. This year we topped it and raised $10,000 total.”
To raise the funds, MFD firefighters sold MFD /Project Women T-shirts. “We still have some shirts left over,” Caniglia said. “If anyone is still interested in buying one of them, they can contact the fire department at 918-421-4953.” Caniglia said the funds raised from the remaining shirts sold will contribute to next year’s efforts in the same fundraiser.
On Friday, firefighters from MFD presented a check to Anne Bogie, the executive director of Oklahoma Project Women. “We provide free breast health care — mammograms and ultra-sounds, biopsies and surgeries — for women with no health insurance and limited financial resources,” Bogie said.
