Local Doc presents heart health info for Women's Heart Health month

McALESTER — Dr. Jinok Chung is reminding everyone it is Women’s Heart Health month.

Chung, an interventional cardiologist, says that February is Women’s Heart Health month and will present information about heart disease Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the Pittsburg County Health Department.

Chung said he’s collaborating with Complete Care Home Health in a joint effort to raise awareness.

Heart disease is a number one killer of women, Chung said.

“Heart disease kills more women than all types of cancer,” he said and added that is mostly because women wait too long to seek medical attention for symptoms, writing it off as heart burn, gall bladder problems and fatigue.

Chung said that in years past, women were told they were least likely to die of heart disease and that was true in 1980. However, over the years, the statistics have changed. Although the overall number of people with heart disease has dramatically declined from more than 500,000 in 1980 to less than 450,000 now, the number of heart disease-related deaths in women has surpassed men since 1985, according to Chung.

Chung said it is important that people understand heart disease can permanently damage the heart and life. He invites everyone to attend the event to learn about heart disease and what can be done to protect oneself from it.

Chung said his goal is improve heart health in southeast Oklahoma.

This will be the 10th year the American Heart Association celebrates February as Women’s Heart Health Month, according to Heart.org.
