Car wreck hospitalizes three; initiates

McALESTER — A car wreck on State Highway 9 on Tuesday sent three people to the hospital and initiated a bomb scare.

According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, 30-year-old McCurtain resident Kyle McCafferty was driving a 2013 Chevrolet westbound on State Highway 9 at 11:50 a.m. Tuesday when his vehicle crossed the center line and struck two eastbound vehicles.

“The trooper (who) was investigating the collision found two small pipes about six inches in length in one of the vehicles,” said OHP Capt. George Brown. “He called in the bomb squad and OHP bomb squad responded. Bomb technicians took X-Rays of the pipes and they were found to be non-explosive.”

The Oklahoma Department of Public Safety released information that State Highway 9 was closed in both directions at the State Highway 9A junction at 12:29 p.m. due to the accident. The road was re-opened at 2:43, according to OHP.

The accident occurred less than a half a mile west of State Highway 9A, according to an OHP report. McCafferty was transported to the McAlester Regional Health Center, where he was listed in stable condition with multiple injuries.

Joe Mitchell, 81, of Stigler, was driving a 1995 Ford with passenger Michael Mitchell, 54, of Stigler, when his vehicle was struck, the report states. Joe Mitchell was transported to MRHC, where he was listed in stable condition with head and internal trunk injuries. Michael Mitchell refused treatment at the scene of the accident, the report states.

Also transported to the hospital was David Deweese, 73, of Eufaula. Deweese was driving a 1997 Ford eastbound on State Highway 9 when McCafferty’s vehicle collided with his, the report states. Deweese was transported to St. Johns Hospital in Tulsa and is listed in serious condition with a head injury.

According to the report, McCafferty’s vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic, struck Joe Mitchell’s vehicle, then struck a guard rail and then hit Deweese’s vehicle. The accident was investigated by OHP Trooper Shane Hackler, of the Pittsburg County detachment. Hackler attributes the cause of the collision to driving under the influence of alcohol.
