Beggs: It’s a good deal

Your money: Hospital CEO request on tonight’s agenda; wants special election to buy doctor’s building

McAlester Regional Health Center President and Chief Executive Officer Shaun Beggs wants the hospital’s trust authority to purchase the Physician’s Building and Ambulatory Surgery Center on the hospital campus.

To do so however, he must first convince the McAlester City Council to call a special election on the matter.

If the council calls the special election, he and other supporters of the measure will then have the task of convincing McAlester voters to approve it.

That’s because of a $500,000 cap on purchases by the city without voter approval. Since the hospital is a trust of the city of McAlester, any purchases by the hospital authority of more than a half-million dollars must first have voter approval.

The McAlester City Council is set to consider and act on Beggs’ request when it holds its regular meeting at 6 tonight in the Council Chambers at City Hall.
