McAlester council decides to keep drug ordinance

McALESTER — City councilors decided Tuesday night to leave McAlester’s new drug law restricting the sale of ephedrine and pseudoepehdrine on the books, despite an attorney general’s ruling that legal experts say nullifies it.

Councilors made the decision during their regular city council meeting, after getting some advice from City Attorney Joe Ervin, who said he thinks Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt is wrong.

“I disagree, respectfully, with the attorney general’s opinion,” Ervin said.

Instead of rescinding the measure, the city council took no action, and instructed City Manager Pete Stasiak to see if any other cities would be interested in joining them to fight the attorney general in court.
