McAlester dance group named fifth in nation
On Sunday, Feb. 7, the McAlester Varsity Pom squad won fifth place at the Universal Dance Association Nationals Dance Team Championship at Disney World in Orlando, Fla.
The McAlester High School Pom squad started competing at nationals in 1997, having won first in the Small Prop Division in 2001, placing fourth in the Hip Hop Division in 2005, and fifth in Hip Hop in 2009. Many times the squad has made the semi-finals in both pom and hip hop divisions. This year’s national competition began Saturday, Feb. 6 at the Disney Hollywood Studios Indiana Jones Amphitheater, where the squad qualified for Sunday’s finals, competing in front of a packed house Sunday at the Wide World of Sports ESPN Milk House Arena, against 40 other top squads from across the United States, including other Oklahoma teams.
The squad competed in December 2009 at the State OSDTDA Competition, held at Oklahoma City University and placed first, making this their 10th state title.
These young ladies spend many hours dedicated to dance and pom in order to be able to compete.
Squad members include: Senior Captains Jenna Partain and Madeline Rind; Junior Co-captain Kayla Quisenberry; juniors Brooke Adcock, Alexis Banks, Maggie Homer, Erica Higgins, Kayla DeNike, Skylar Greer, Tiara Johnson, Kimberly Timmons and Carly James; sophomores Hunter Graham, Chandler Davy, Hailey Hyden, Jill Hundley, and Caity Nelms; and freshmen Victoria Laws, Katie Sams, and Taylor Horne. The squad is coached by sponsor Penny Oss.
