McALESTER — It might be cold outside, but the heat was on the McAlester City Council during a discussion about an open records request to the city by a McAlester citizen for travel expenses of MPower’s Executive Director Shari Cooper.
This discussion came during a regular meeting of the McAlester City Council on Tuesday night in which the council failed to agree on a measure about an open records request concerning McAlester’s economic development organization.
A Sept. 27 letter from Charles Riggs addressed to the entire council, Mayor Kevin Priddle, City Manager Pete Stasiak and City Clerk Cora Middleton requested “any and all of MPower’s Executive Director Shari Coopers’ travel records from Nov. 1 2009 through Sept. 23, 2011.”
The reason for the request, according to the letter, was “rumors” of excessive spending in Las Vegas.
“It is rumored that excessive spending has occurred on these trips, specifically a trip made to Las Vegas and possibly improper expenses made with public monies,” the letter states.
