McALESTER —
An elderly man collapsed from exhaustion in triple digit heat Tuesday at a McAlester intersection the day after his knee surgery.
Irene King, of Vanzant, Mo., said she noticed Gene Anthony with a walker crossing the intersection at Main Street and Washington Avenue in McAlester.
“He made it all the way across with much difficulty,” King said.
King said once the man made it across the road, he fell to the ground.
King said that she stopped her vehicle and with the help of three other people they assisted Anthony to his feet.
“I do not understand why anyone allowed him to get out in this heat,” King said.
The temperature reached almost 103 degrees on Tuesday, according to the Weather Underground website.
King said she is disappointed that no one asked him where he was going on such a hot day or why no one asked him if he needed any assistance.
King said Anthony's knee was swollen to an abnormal size and when she asked him what was wrong with his knee, he told her he’d had knee surgery the day before.
King asked Anthony why he was out in the heat and he said that he really needed postage stamps.
King said that she gave Anthony a ride home to The Plaza, but she’s not sure what happened afterwards and is still disturbed by the incident.
