McALESTER —
Saddle the horses and step in the stirrups.
The gate is still open on the possibility of reviving the famed Oklahoma State Penitentiary Rodeo in McAlester — at least as far as the Department of Corrections is concerned.
That’s according to state DOC Director Justin Jones and DOC Corrections Board Chairman Matthew McBee.
Although Jones said there won’t be time to get a rodeo together this year, he told the News-Capital he’s prepared to take the first steps next year that may lead to its return in the future.
He’s hoping others, such as the city of McAlester and Pittsburg County, will climb in the saddle as well.
