Local representative takes oath for new term

McALESTER — District 18 state Rep. Donnie Condit, D-McAlester, had a unique experience when sworn into office along with 99 other state representatives Wednesday at the state Capitol in Oklahoma City.

Oklahoma Supreme Court Chief Justice Steven Taylor, a McAlester native, performed the swearing in ceremony for all 100 state representatives who were present. (Condit said one seat is still in dispute, which accounts for 100 state representatives attending the ceremony, instead of the usual 101).

“It was great to be sworn in by one of my constituents,” Condit said. He said Taylor had also sworn him into office two years ago for his first term at the post.

Condit said his wife, Karen Condit, their children, Ami Bax, Chris Condit and Brittany Condit, and grandchildren, Emma Bax, Joey Bax and Jack Bax, were all present for the swearing-in ceremony.

Condit said one of the things for which he will be watching this year is another attempt to further reduce the state income tax.

“It scares me when you take 32 percent of the budget for the state” without knowing how to make up for the reduction, he said.

“You’ve either got to reduce services or come up with income somewhere else,” he said.

Condit also plans to keep a watch for any attempts to force schools to consolidate.

“I’m against forced school consolidation,” Condit said.
