Pitts. Co. Animal Shelter director pleased with positive changes

McALESTER — Pittsburg County Animal Shelter Director Sandra Hefley is very pleased with the positive changes made at the shelter over the last year.

“We’ve made a lot of positive changes,” Hefley said Monday morning at the regularly scheduled Pittsburg County Commissioners meeting. “Morale among the employees is great. We are like a family.”

Hefley attended Monday’s meeting to give commissioners a 2012 year-end report. Numbers at the shelter are staying steady, Hefley said, with just a slight bit of increase compared to recent years.

In 2012, there were 2,719 dogs surrendered to the county shelter. In the same year, 2,493 cats were surrendered, according to a shelter report. These numbers were compared to previous years:

• In 2011 — There were 2,625 dogs surrendered and 2,004 cats;

• In 2010 — There were 2,591 dogs surrendered and 1,801 cats;

• In 2009 — There were 2,942 dogs surrendered and 1,657 cats.

“There are still a lot of people who do not realize we are there,” Hefley said, adding that she urges local residents to come to the shelter to adopt a pet.

The Pittsburg County Animal Shelter is open to the public Tuesdays through Fridays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The cost to adopt a pet is $20 for dogs and $15 for cats. Each adopted pet is spayed or neutered prior to adoption, Hefley said. Each pet also comes with all vaccinations and a microchip implant. And families can take home a great pet for a very low cost, Hefley said.
