McALESTER —
On January 11, we will be asked to vote to increase our property taxes by 30 percent. The McAlester school board and the school superintendent are trying aggressively to force the property owners of District 80 to pass an outrageous tax on local property.
In an economy where some people simply cannot afford a tax increase without causing a financial hardship, this is not the time. Property owners simply cannot afford any tax increase, period. This bond proposal is not a good idea.
If the residents of District 80 pass this they had better be ready to fork over lots more cash as businesses will be forced to charge more due to 30 percent additional property taxes. As they say, someone has to pay.
Please take note, students going to McAlester schools from Krebs, Frink, Kinkead Hills, the Springs and from (U.S. Highway) 69 South will not pay one single dime in sending children to McAlester School District No. 80.
For the sake of kids vote no on January 11.

There are plans to cut expenses of government, yet cuts aren’t always justified and if they affect people directly, there is a lot of unhappiness. Plans to close the Social Security office in Hugo is a recent example. -

You don’t need that! We have been hearing a lot of that lately, mostly by the left, but also by the right. They are mostly talking about semi-automatic rifles and large-capacity magazines this time. Of course, we don’t need them -
