Our family has just finished what I would call an awesome experience in youth sports in McAlester. I was absolutely impressed with Coaches Glen Morris and Porky Falcon, who coached our son Carson’s soccer team this fall. Their dedication and commitment to McAlester’s young people is commendable. Equal praise should be heaped on Lynn Edwards and the staff of the Boys and Girls Club of McAlester for their professionalism.
Our family had such a positive experience with this team’s parents who genuinely wanted to be involved in an activity that would enrich their children’s lives. Their words were all positive and supportive of a team mentality. Too many times we hear of scenarios where parents are out of control and have lost focus on the real purpose of youth sports; not so with these parents who were encouraging and nurturing of all children, not just their own.
A Hollywood movie company could not have made a better production of small town Americana than the “home movies” these kids’ parents took during games. I have many memories of my own boyhood days involved in McAlester youth sports, but this experience as a parent was many times more rewarding. I do not know what I will remember more vividly: images of the kids slipping and sliding in the mud – or of their parents’ faces as they assessed “the damage.”
Lastly, I am proud to be a member of a community that supports its children by providing first class facilities. I applaud the vision of those who have promoted this investment in our children.
