I am writing to encourage a yes vote on the January 11, 2011 school bond issues for McAlester Public Schools. My business is located in this school district and my ad valorem taxes will increase if the bond issue is passed, but I believe the time is here for us to take an important step to provide modern facilities for the children and youth of McAlester.
As a member of the Oklahoma legislature, I am very much aware of the reduction in state revenues for school districts in the last few years and it doesn’t look promising in the near future for that to increase. No matter what the revenue situation, the needs in our schools have not decreased. For capital improvements to occur in the McAlester district, local funding must be increased.
The plans for additions and renovations to facilities have been explained to me and I believe these are necessary to ensure McAlester students are taught in safe, secure settings that promote academic excellence and pride in their school and community. As there is a very real potential for school consolidation to occur as a result of the recent election of state officials and legislators, the implementation of the plan to do the proposed capital improvement projects will put McAlester a step ahead in regard to increased enrollment because of possible area school closings.
The addition of an event center in our community will be a boost to the local economy, while providing our students a state of the art venue for athletic contests and other performances. While the aged facilities in the McAlester district have served us well and been properly maintained, there comes a time when new construction is required.
Please get the information you need to make an informed decision on January 11th. I hope you will agree with me that a yes vote is appropriate.
