Letter to the editor: McAlester's blue trash cans must (not) go

McALESTER — A few days ago a letter appeared on the opinion page that at first intrigued me; then, after some thought, I agree with it totally. The big, blue trash containers must go; they are an eyesore.

First of all, they are too big. You can put a large amount of refuse in them. Secondly, they are blue. I would have preferred a nice shade of purple, maybe even plaid. Third, how dare they put wheels and handles on them, making it easy to move them?

I say let’s go back to the way it was. I much prefer walking down the street lined with beaten and broken trash cans and torn-open plastic bags. That made it much easier for wild and stray animals to forage for scraps. Nothing like waking up and going outside to see and smell rotting food and used diapers. Makes that first cup of coffee even more enjoyable.

It takes me 15 to 20 seconds to wheel my big, blue trash can from the side of my house to the curb when I go to work in the morning and the same amount of time to retrieve it in the evening. I don’t have time to waste and that 30 to 40 seconds is crucial to my life.

The big, blue can must go, so we can go back to living on a street that looks and smells like a landfill.
