Jack Mouser's Letter to the Editor

KREBS — Editor:

The very first amendment to our Constitution of the United States of America is Amendment No. 1 — “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.”

The Constitution guarantees the city of McAlester the right to place a statuette of a cowboy on a street light arm located at South Main Street and Choctaw Avenue. It’s one of the freedoms we have. There is no law said they have to, or no law that states they can’t.

There is also no law for or against placing one on the corner of Third Street and Choctaw Avenue of a soldier bowing in respect and honor before the flag of the United States of America and the Republic for which it stands. That’s one of the freedoms he represents and fights for.

Congress or the city “shall” make no law that demands a cross be placed on a street sign or prohibits the free exercise thereof.

The point being made is the poles belong to the city. They are maintained by the city. They are on city property. Thus, the city can do with them as they please. It does not imply the city is endorsing religion, or anything in particular. It’s another freedom guaranteed by the Constitution.

The ACLU may bluff, and they can assemble, they can protest. That’s also a freedom we have. But none of the 27 amendments say they can rule.

This is just my observation. Ask yourself what you believe God’s observation may be.
