Tax season begins; KIBOIS offers free help
It’s tax season and once again KIBOIS Community Action is providing free help preparing tax returns.
This is the seventh year KIBOIS Community Action has participated in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program. More than 1,000 returns were processed last year.
Beginning Friday, KIBOIS Community Action staff will start providing assistance at no cost to low-income individuals, elderly persons and families that are served by the KIBOIS Head Start Program in completing their tax return. The only requirement is that income be below $50,000.
E-filing for 2009 tax returns begins Friday.
Taxpayers must bring a valid photo identification and Social Security cards (or individual taxpayer identification numbers) for themselves, spouses and dependents. They should also bring this year’s tax package (if available), wage and earnings statements (Forms W-2), interest and dividends statements (Forms 1099), a copy of last year’s return, and any other information concerning their income and expenses for 2009.
To schedule an appointment, call 423-3525 in McAlester or 429-9999 in Hartshorne.

Cell phones and moisture don't mix
Last spring, during one of the torrential downpours, my coat pocket filled with rainwater while I fed the horses. Of course, that would be the pocket my phone was in. I discovered that my phone was not the least bit waterproof when I heard muffled automated beeps going off randomly in my pocket.

Access: The ‘I’m lazy and don’t want to work card’
Can anybody explain how individuals that are perfectly capable of working get, as I’ve heard some refer to it as, an “Oklahoma credit card” (Access Card)?
