Horses seized; owners say animals are afflicted with disease, vet disagrees
ANIMALS | Horses weigh abut 450 pounds; vet says they should weigh 900
A sheriff’s deputy says he was shocked by the appearance of three horses he found in a corral near Ashland.
Pittsburg County Sheriff’s Dep. Tommy Lyons was serving an arrest warrant Friday morning when he noticed three horses: A pair of two-year-olds and one yearling. All three appeared to be in bad shape, he said.
“You could see the hip bones, back bones and rib cage showing,” Lyons said.
Accompanied by officer Kevin Martin, Lyons returned to the property to seize the horses. On closer inspection, Lyons noted that there were no oats or grain available to the horses.
There were other horses on the property and they appeared to be in good condition, Lyons said. When asked by deputies why these horses appeared to be malnourished, the owners said the horses had rhinopneumonitis, an upper respiratory herpes infection.
The horses are now under the care of McAlester veterinarian Brian Renegar.
According to him, the horses do not have rhinopneumonitis. The veterinarian said they were starving.
Renegar said the body condition of horses is “rated on a scale of zero to ten. A zero to two rating would mean the horse could not stand.”
He said he would rate the horses at about 2.2.
While caring for the horses, Renegar said one of the horses spooked and fell to the ground.
The horse was unable to get up on it’s own. Renegar was able to coax the horse up finally.
According to Renegar, the horses should weigh about 900 pounds; however, as of Tuesday, the horses weighed about 450 pounds each.
Lyons anticipates charges may be filed against the owners as early as today.

Access: The ‘I’m lazy and don’t want to work card’
Can anybody explain how individuals that are perfectly capable of working get, as I’ve heard some refer to it as, an “Oklahoma credit card” (Access Card)?
