FEMA funds granted
Pittsburg County has been awarded $19,775 in federal funds to supplement emergency food and shelter programs
Pittsburg County has been awarded $19,775 in federal funds to supplement emergency food and shelter programs.
The selection was made through The Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program, which is chaired by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
A local board is charged with distributing the funds appropriated by Congress to help expand the capacity of food and shelter programs in high-need areas around the county, according to KI BOIS Community Action.
The local board consists of the Ministerial Alliance, Catholic Organization, county commissioners, KI BOIS Community Action, Youth Emergency Shelter, a homeless representative, the American Red Cross, the Salvation Army and the United Way.
Board members will determine how the money awarded to Pittsburg County will be distributed among the emergency food and shelter programs operated by the local service agencies in the area.
The local board will recommend which agencies get the money, as well as any additional funds that become available through the program.
To be eligible to receive funds through the grant, a local agency must:
• Be a private, voluntary non-profit organization or a unit of government.
• Have an accounting system.
• Practice non-discrimination.
• Have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs.
• If it’s a private voluntary organization, it must have a voluntary board.
The national and local boards are urging all qualifying agencies to apply.
Any public or private voluntary agencies interested in applying for funds through the Emergency Food and Shelter Program must contact Linda Love, either by mail at P.O. Box 727, Stigler, OK 74462 or by phone at (918) 967-9992 and ask for an application.
The deadline for applications to be received at the Pittsburg County KI BOIS Community Action office at 609 E. Peoria in McAlester is at 10 a.m. on Feb. 9.
The national board chaired by FEMA which awarded the funds also has representatives from the Salvation Army, the American Red Cross, United Jewish Communities, Catholic Charities, USA; the National Council of Churches of Christ in the USA and the United Way of America.

Cell phones and moisture don't mix
Last spring, during one of the torrential downpours, my coat pocket filled with rainwater while I fed the horses. Of course, that would be the pocket my phone was in. I discovered that my phone was not the least bit waterproof when I heard muffled automated beeps going off randomly in my pocket.

Access: The ‘I’m lazy and don’t want to work card’
Can anybody explain how individuals that are perfectly capable of working get, as I’ve heard some refer to it as, an “Oklahoma credit card” (Access Card)?
