Annual Christmas parade is Thursday

Not only sights, but sounds as well, will be featured in this year’s Christmas Parade of Lights.

“The theme is ‘The Sounds of Christmas,’” said Donnie Lennington, executive director of McAlester Main Street.

The parade is set for 7 p.m.. on Thursday in downtown McAlester, with the reviewing stand to be set up at First Street and Choctaw Avenue.

Apparently the theme has resulted in a lot of interest among those who are creating floats or some other type of entry for the annual nighttime parade.

“We have about 50 entries lined up,” Lennington said.

In addition to celebrating the holiday season, parade entries judged to be the best have the opportunity to end the parade with more than that holiday feeling.

“We have three cash prizes,” Lennington said.

“First place is $300; second is $200 and third place is $150.” The winners will be selected by judges in the reviewing stand, although Lennington doesn’t expect the winners to be notified until the following day.

An honored guest — Santa Claus, of course — is expected to join the parade.

Other festive touches are also being added.

“We’ll have some carolers directed by Rodney Briggs caroling up and down the streets,” Lennington said.

As a fund-raiser for Main Street, photos with Santa will be available ay Studio 23 in downtown McAlester.

Lennington said that for $10, those who get their picture taken with Santa will get a disc with several photos on it and can also help out McAlester Main Street.

The cash awards for the parade winners are sponsored by Public Service Company of Oklahoma and Devon Energy, Lennington said.

“We encourage people to come out and have a good time,” he said.
