Teams from the Pittsburg County Health Department have been fanning out to schools across the county — all part of an effort to give the Influenza A H1N1 swine flu vaccination to as many children as possible.
“We’re in Hartshorne today and we were in Krebs on Wednesday,” Pittsburg County Health Department Administrator Mike Echelle said this morning.
Plans call for the health department team to start next at McAlester Public Schools. Health department teams plan to be at the Washington, William Gay and Jefferson schools on Friday.
“The remainder of the McAlester Public Schools are set for after Thanksgiving,” Echelle said.
A health department team will also go to Quinton Public Schools after Thanskgiving, Echelle said.
Other public schools in the county have already been visited or have been scheduled for a visit from health department teams to administer vaccinations for the Influenza A H1N1 swine flu virus, said Echelle.
No child will be given a vaccination unless an approval form has been signed by the child’s parent or guardian, according to Echelle.
Meanwhile, county residents continue to walk into the Pittsburg County Health Department for the Influenza A H1N1 swine flu vaccines, which became available to the general public earlier this week.
To get one of the vaccinations, simply report to the health department during regular business hours, which are from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Monday through Friday. The Pittsburg County Health Department is at 1400 E. College Ave., across Strong Boulevard from the McAlester Regional Health Center.
“We’ve had a steady flow of individuals,” Echelle said this morning.
The health department has already exhausted its initial supply of the regular seasonal flu vaccine for adults, although some of the pediatric seasonal flu vaccine is still available for children.
Echelle hopes to have more of the adult regular seasonal flu vaccine available for adults sometime around the end of November or the first of December.

Cell phones and moisture don't mix
Last spring, during one of the torrential downpours, my coat pocket filled with rainwater while I fed the horses. Of course, that would be the pocket my phone was in. I discovered that my phone was not the least bit waterproof when I heard muffled automated beeps going off randomly in my pocket.

Access: The ‘I’m lazy and don’t want to work card’
Can anybody explain how individuals that are perfectly capable of working get, as I’ve heard some refer to it as, an “Oklahoma credit card” (Access Card)?
