The couple had been dating when, in 1959, Vic Beaty enlisted in the Air Force and they ended their relationship, but kept in touch by writing letters. Beaty came home on leave in 1962. The couple reunited and got engaged. Beaty hitchhiked from the Air Force Base in Clinton to Tulsa to marry Linda.
