Pittsburg saddles up for Founders Day

McALESTER — Team ropin’, mutton bustin’, cowboy shoot-em-ups, free grub and a rodeo; Saddle up your horses for the 26th Annual Pittsburg Founders Day Celebration.

“We have one of the wildest rodeos in Oklahoma,” said Roy Labor a lifelong Pittsburg resident and one of the event organizers.

Except for the $5 entry to see the rodeo, “it’s all free,” Labor said.

Live entertainment will begin on July 12th with a band at the “Rodeo Dance” from 7 to 8 p.m. at Drew Park.

Rodeo action starts July 13th and 14th with Mutton Bustin’ at 7p.m. and a rodeo at 8 p.m. each night.

July 14th will kick off with the Team Roping with entries at 8 a.m. and roping at 9 a.m. followed by the “Annual Founders Day Parade” at 10 a.m. The cowboy shoot-outs and the free barbecue lunch from 11- 12:30.

“We have lots and lots of horses entered in the parade, there will be something for everybody,” Labor said.

Saturday, for first time in the 26 years of the event is the Cowboy Straight Away Race.

“We will race them two to three at a time, tournament style,” Labor said. We will have three categories, Open Horse, Ponies and Mules. $20 entry and a 100 percent pay back with 60/40 split between first and second place.

Labor said non-food vendors are welcome and space is free.
