MHS grad slates opera debut at OCU

McALESTER — A McAlester college student is making her operatic stage debut this weekend when she performs in Oklahoma City.

Paige Grilliot is set to perform in one of the leading roles in “Dialogues of the Carmelites,” an opera concerning the fate of an order of nuns in the aftermath of the French Revolution.

Grilliot is set to take the stage during the Saturday night performance. The opera begins at 8 p.m. at Oklahoma City University, presented by OCU and the Bass School of Music, named in honor of the late Wanda Bass, of McAlester.

A 2006 McAlester High School graduate, Grilliot is in her second year of graduate studies at OCU in opera performance.

She is cast as Mother Marie, one of the leading roles in the highly-acclaimed opera.

“Dialogues of the Carmelites” will be performed in English during its OCU run, with full orchestral accompaniment.

“It’s a really powerful story,” Grilliot said of the opera.

Performing in “Dialogues of the Carmelites” is another step forward in Grilliot’s musical achievements.

At McAlester Public Schools, she played in the band and served as drum major in 2005.

With the clarinet her instrument of choice, Grilliot also played violin, saxophone and performed with the school’s steel drum band.

Continuing her musical studies in college at the University of Arkansas in Fayettville, she played and performed  with the University of Arkansas Razorback Marching Band.

Studying voice at the University of Arkansas led to her current studies in opera performance at OCU.

Grilliot is the daughter of Debra Grilliot, a teacher at Parker Intermediate Center, and Brent Grilliot, business manager for McAlester Public Schools.

Tickets range from $12 to $25 each and are available online at www.okcu.edu/tickets. Anyone needing more information can phone 405-208-5227.
