McALESTER —
October is National 4-H Month. With that thought in mind, our county 4-H program has already completed, and will do several more, activities this month.
We started our month by submitting public service announcements to promote National 4-H month to our area radio stations. On Monday, we met with the Board of County Commissioners and they signed a proclamation to support National 4-H month in Pittsburg County.
Participating 4-H Leadership Team members in attendance included Kristia Mason and Kelsie Roach, of Crowder; Elisabeth Willis and Megan Woodard, of Canadian; Chris Maxcey, of Savanna; Lexie Lerblance and Taylor Williams, of Frink-Chambers; Kali and Tori Wilson, of Hartshorne; Samantha Brownlee, of McAlester High School, and Ruth Bullard, of Indianola.
On Tuesday, we accepted entries for our 4-H Promotional Poster contest and election ballots for candidates for county 4-H offices. All of these entries may be entered in the 2012 Pittsburg County Free Fair and they help us promote this activity. The posters for the clubs that wish to participate will be displayed at our McAlester Tractor Supply throughout the month of October. Tractor Supply is a national sponsor of 4-H and we annually hold a Paper Clover program with their business.
On Saturday, we held the Paper Clover promotion and, in support of that, we had area 4-H members set up booths to promote our program. Elisabeth Willis had a booth promoting her 4-H service project called the 4-H Music Festival, to help raise money for the Therapeutic Equestrian Association of McAlester.
Ruth Bullard, Megan Woodard and Tori and Kali Wilson worked a crafts booth for young children. Jill Weaver, of Kiowa, and Kelsie Roach and Katie Cecil, of Crowder, worked the 4-H promotional booth. Stuart FFA sponsored a concession stand. The Brownlee 4-H family, of Crowder, and MHS 4-H had a petting zoo with poultry and goats. Brandi Moore, of Kiowa, brought her goats too.
Skyla Edwards, of Hartshorne 4-H, brought her rabbits for the Petting Zoo and the Yount 4-H family, from Crowder, brought their swine projects. Samantha Brownlee conducted an entomology booth to promote one of her 4-H projects.
Later this month we will hold our annual 4-H Awards Banquet to recognize all of 4-H members that completed a county or state record book. The banquet is also held to recognize our top members and clubs for their participation in 4-H. Our banquet will recognize our 4-H Leader of the Year, Friend of 4-H, Outstanding Junior 4-H members and County 4-H Hall of Fame. The banquet is scheduled for Oct. 15 at 6 p.m. at the Southeast Expo Center in McAlester.
The week of Oct. 19 to 21, we will send some of our teen leaders to the Southeast District 4-H Leadership Conference. This event is our district level convention for teen leadership. We have several 4-H members running for offices at the district and state level that will be voted on during this event.
Our teens running for those offices are as follows: Chris Maxcey is running for District President, Samantha Brownlee is running for District Vice President, Elisabeth Willis is running for District Secretary, Ruth Bullard is running for District Reporter and Kelsie Roach is running for District Song Leader. In addition, Kelsie Roach is unopposed for her State 4-H Council position for District Representative for Cluster 1 and Jill Weaver is running for State 4-H Council At Large Representative for Clusters 1 and 4.
