Max Eugene Kinyon

McALESTER — Max Eugene Kinyon, 83, of McAlester, died Monday, March 4, 2013, at his home.

The family will receive visitors from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Bishop Funeral Service.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Frink Baptist Church with the Rev. James Collins officiating, assisted by the Rev. Bart Patterson. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Bishop Funeral Service of McAlester.

Born July 16, 1929, in Stillwater, he was the son of Loyd Luther and Lorena Humphrey Kinyon. He attended elementary school in Stillwater and then in the 9th grade moved to Krebs with his parents and graduated from McAlester High School.

He enjoyed roping calves and steers, which led to a lifetime of ranching.

He married Pauline Shuman on Aug. 25, 1948, in McAlester and in 1952 began his service with the United States Army during the Korean War. He served until 1955 and then returned to McAlester and operated the feed store at the old McAlester Stockyards.

Later on he became the owner and operator of the new McAlester Union Stockyards until his retirement in 1984. During this time he also was an auctioneer and a cattle order buyer.

He was a charter and longtime member of the Frink Baptist Church, a lifetime member of the Pittsburg County Cattlemen’s Association and McAlester B.P.O.E. Elks Lodge No. 533. He was a board member for the Southeast Expo Center and did the purchasing of its land on the Pittsburg County Courthouse steps. He was a 35 year member of Frink Chambers School Board.

He also enjoyed watching Oklahoma City Thunder basketball games, the National Finals Rodeo and all other rodeos.

Survivors include his wife, Pauline Kinyon, of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Terry and Pam Kinyon, of McAlester; a grandson, Joseph Kinyon, of The University of Oklahoma in Norman.

Also, a brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Gail Kinyon, Clovis, N.M.; a sister-in-law, Melanie Shuman, of McAlester; seven nieces including, special niece, Lee Ann Sherrill, of Hartshorne, Laurie Walker and husband, Wade, Amarillo, Texas, Susie Thomason and husband, Seth, Amarillo, Mona Bryant, Clovis, Melinda Sandefur and husband, Buddy, of Hartshorne, Janie Sherrill, of Hartshorne, and Twyla Kelley and husband, Don, of McAlester; a nephew, Dean Bryant, Clovis.

And, a great-niece, Erin Thomason, Dallas; four great-nephews, Pete Thomason, University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Danny Walker, Amarillo, Scott Walker, Amarillo, and Buddy Sherrill and wife, Angie, Sherman, Texas, and numerous other family members.

He was preceded in death by his parents Loyd and Lorena Kinyon; a son, Wayne Kinyon, in 1988; a sister, Margie Bryant and her husband, Allen, and a nephew, Buddy Sherrill.

Pallbearers will be Nate Hammer, Odis Trammell, Joey Trammell, David Owens, Don Kelley, Bob Alig, Doy Adams and Butch Mellor.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of Frink Baptist Church Mens “UP” Class, Bud Murdaugh, Bill Murdaugh, Wayne Sexton, Melvin Hall, Mike Hunter and Joe White.

Memorials may be made to Frink Baptist Church, 1830 S. George Nigh Expressway McAlester, OK 74501.
