John D. “Corky” Grubbs dies at 66

McALESTER — John D. “Corky” Grubbs, 66, of McAlester, December 15,  2012, McAlester Regional Health Center.

Family will receive visitors from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Bishop Funeral Service.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Bishop Chapel of Memories. Interment will follow at Ashland Cemetery, Ashland Community. The Revs. Chip Lott and Richard Magby will officiate. Honors will be give by the Department of Corrections. Arrangements are under the direction of Bishop Funeral Service.

Grubbs was born on Jan. 26, 1946, in McAlester to John Howard and Verna Harrington Grubbs.

He attended schools in McAlester and graduated from McAlester High School in 1964. He married Martha Jane Grubbs on Oct. 7, 1972, in McAlester and they have spent all of their married lives in this area. He was a member of the Oklahoma National Guard with the 445 Military Police and retired as a Captain.

He began working for the Department of Corrections in 1972. He later served as warden until 2005 and then he retired in February 2006.

He was  a bi-vocational pastor for the Baptist churches in Blanco, Wardville and Lehigh.

He retired in 2010 due to illness. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 96 and was a 32 degree Mason of the Scottish Rite. He was also on the Youth Emergency Shelter Board, the Expo Board and a member of the Calvary Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife Martha Jane Grubbs of the home; a son and daughter-in-law Justin Scott and Kara Grubbs of Florence, Alabama; a daughter and son-in-law Margaret Denise and John Green of McAlester; six grandchildren, Brayden Sexton, of McAlester, Allison Grubbs of Florence, Al., Hayden Grubbs, of Florence, Haley Grubbs, of Florence, Riley  Grubbs, of Florence, Dylan Green, of McAlester; nephew David Smith, of Philadelphia, Miss.; niece, Lizzy Grubbs, of Muskogee; two brothers-in-law, Francis Smith of Philadelphia, Mississippi, Mason Moore Jr., of Dallas, Texas; sister-in-law, Jeanie Grubbs, of Muskogee; adopted daughter LaDonna Jones, of McAlester. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents; one sister, Roxie Carolyn Smith; one brother, Terry Grubbs; a nephew, John Howard Grubbs II and a niece, Terri Jean Webster.

Pallbearers will be Jerry Killian, Chuck Nelms, Robert Womack, Paul Rogers, Mark Ichord and Gerald Goddard.
