Dr. George Ernest “Buddy” Cook

McALESTER — Dr. George Ernest “Buddy” Cook, Ph.D., 78, of Dow, died Nov. 19, 2012, at his home.

Family will receive visitors Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Brumley-Mills Funeral Home in Hartshorne.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church in Hartshorne. The Rev. Daniel Miller will officiate. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in McAlester.

He was born Sept. 11, 1934, to Martha Louisa (Johnston) and Ernest Leslie Cook of Dow. He grew up and attended elementary school in Dow.

He graduated from Haileyville High School and attended Eastern Oklahoma A&M College in Wilburton.

While in high school and college he worked at the family owned saw mill/lumber yard in Haileyville. He also attended OBU in Shawnee. In 1957, he was drafted into the U.S. Army where he was stationed at Fort Stewart, Georgia in Hinesville.

He eventually met and married Latwindle Ann Mobley. He attended Georgia Southern University. He continued his career associated with the military at Ft. Stewart, Ga., as a Safety Officer and attended New York University during that time. He accepted a promotion and moved back to Oklahoma as Safety Director at Fort Sill in Lawton.

In 1978 he received a Masters Degree from OU. He retired in 1988, after 30 years in the safety field, and moved back to Dow where they built their home on family land. In 1996, Ann passed away after a five-year battle with cancer.

He began to work again as an educator through Kiamichi Technology Center in McAlester teaching Industrial Safety classes until age 70 when he retired again. He began to buy and remodel houses to flip and rent. In 2007 he married Debbie Waterbury, his longtime companion and best friend.

In 2008 he completed his studies and received his Ph.D. in Human Resources Management from Cambridge State University in Mississippi. He is a member of First Baptist Church in Hartshorne; member of the Hartshorne/Haileyville Lodge No. 122; member of the Scottish Rite Valley of McAlester where he was honored in 2007 with the Title of KCCH.

He was an avid supporter of the McAlester Rite Care Childhood Learning Program.

He was survived by Debbie Cook of the home in Dow; step-son and friend; Jared Waterbury and Chiniqua Anderson, of Hartshorne; one brother and sister-in-law John Henry and Earlene Cook, of Hartshorne; sister-in-law, Patricia Johnston, of Hartshorne; several nieces with spouses and children and one nephew with spouse and child.

Pallbearers are John Allford, Clem Peppers, Jerry Donathan, Ron Gragg, Ron Cunningham and Paul Diehl.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Martha Cook; first wife, Latwindle “Ann” Cook; brother, Oliver Johnston; grandparents, George W. and Lydia Johnston; George W. and Mary E. Cook.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the McAlester Rite Care Childhood Learning Program at the McAlester Scottish Rite or the Hartshorne First Baptist Church.
