Joan Harper dies at 76

McALESTER — Joan Harper, 76, of Indianola, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2013.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today at First Baptist Church of Indianola with the Rev. Richard Crook officiating. Burial will be at Choate Prairie Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Garrett Family Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Checotah.

Born June 3, 1936, in Indianola, she was the daughter of Alvie and Elizabeth (Cathey) Yates. She attended Indianola public schools, graduating in 1954. She later attended Northeastern State University.

She met and later married A.J. Harper on June 7, 1957, in McAlester. She was a homemaker.

She and her husband owned and operated Harper Grocery Store for three years. She later began working at McAlester Regional Medical Center in the food service department, retiring in 1997.

She enjoyed sewing, cooking, gardening and being with her family. She would make homemade peanut brittle along with her co-workers at the hospital to donate to charities for them to sell.

She taught Sunday school and vacation bible school. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Indianola.

Survivors include her son, Mike Harper and his wife, Penny, of Tulsa; daughters, Debbie Stacey and her husband, Mike, of Owasso, and Robyn Prescott and her husband, Jerry, of Indianola.

Also, sister, Janet Cox, of Madill; brother, Jerry Yates, of McAlester; seven grandsons, Allen, Aaron and Craig Stacey, Raymond Parker and Brian, J.D. and Gary Prescott.

And, two granddaughters, April Dungan and Rachel Prescott; 10 great-grandchildren, Josh, Chris, Garrett, Gauge, Tyler, Morgan, Kaylan, Skyler, Lilly and Trevor, and numerous nieces, nephews, other family and friends.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Allen Stacey, Aaron Stacy, Craig Stacey, Raymond Parker, Brian Prescott, J.D. Prescott and Gary Prescott.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, A.J.; brother, Jimmy Yates; sister, Wanda Buse, and grandson, Elijah James Harper.
