McALESTER —
Sue Miller and Debbie McCauley “kicked it up a notch” with colored plates, napkins and centerpieces of Mardi Gras colors for the February luncheon of the Casual Gourmet Club.
Their theme was recipes from Emeril Lagasse, the American celebrity chef, television personality and cookbook author.
Casual Gourmet Director Margaret Fields welcomed guests Debbie Nelson and Kimberly Thornton to the meeting and conducted the business meeting. She also announced the General Federation of Women’s Club will sponsor Relay for Life to be held Sept. 26 and 27 and Joyce McNally will chair the event.
Fields said GFWC will start collecting money from all its clubs as a donation to the event. She also reported volunteer hours for GFWC were 20,500 hours.
During the meeting, it was announced the Homemakers Club will hold a “Beans for Brains” lunch April 5 to benefit a scholarship program and tickets are on sale from club members.
Nancy Gates read the treasurer’s report, Susan Kanard recapped minutes and Judy Goodyear gave the Sunshine Report.
Also during the meeting, Thornton gave a presentation about the McAlester Regional Health Center’s Wellness Center, including membership requirements and a description of programs available.
Fields collected T-shirts, shoes, socks and personal care items from members for donation to the Good Samaritan Men’s Shelter.
McCauley shared the personal history of Lagasse, the chef of choice for the dishes served. She said Lagasse uses Louisiana ingredients as well as Asian, Portuguese and Southwestern as a “New-New Orleans” version of Creole cooking.
And she said he is notable for using catch phrases such as “Bam” and “Kick it up a Notch.”
The hostesses served Lagasse’s sausage gumbo over white rice accompanied by fresh salad greens, tomatoes, mini-muffuletta sandwiches, lemon water, tea and coffee.
The desserts were New Orleans bread pudding with a bourbon sauce, and apple-raspberry crisp with oat topping and vanilla ice cream.
Also attending the meeting were members June Boyd, Betty Bruckner, Joyce Bridges, Tracy Bridges, Debbie Brown, Vicky Cherry, Karen Kirby, Jan McBee, Cecilia McMahan, Karla Schmidt and Ada Nell Ward.
The next meeting will be hosted by Cheryl James, McMahan and Goodyear at the Puterbaugh House on March 19. The theme will be “Rachael Ray — 30 Minute Meals.”
